My missus says she enjoys it as much as I do. I was never a fan of country walks whereas she always was. Then came the DSLR and everything changed!

First, it was gentle walks around The Lakes and now this. She even brought up the suggestion of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro!

I've gotta love her for it. Not everyone has the patience to stop and wait for me to 'get my shot'.

Brings back some nice memories of my last 2 summer holidays. It must be good to have time to spend on photography, whenever we went on any walks it was a case of 'Oh come on dad, not another photo'.

Well, I've got a 70-200 f/4L IS (my current gear is listed on my About page) and to be honest, I don't use it a great deal. I reckon that I'd probably use that focal length range more on a full-frame body like the 5D MKII (drool) however, when I do use it the IS is handy.

It does seem a heck of lot more for the IS on the f/2.8, but if I got the non-IS version I'd always have that niggling doubt in the back of my mind telling me that the grass would have been more saturated on the IS side.

For the time being, upgrading my longer lenses isn't a top priority as I'm shooting mostly <= 50mm. I think I'd go full frame before I did that.

Plug away! Looks very useful, Colin. Thanks for the heads up. I've added a link to my Photography Resources page too.

What's it written in?

The 70-200 f/2.8 is a cracking lens but I would save yourself an extra £450 and go for the non-IS one myself. I much prefer a tripod and longer exposure than IS (I am often disappointed with IS performance). IS has it's place when you don't want to carry a tripod - but it will never match the quality of a steady camera. The 70-200 is also an amazing sports lens, and I see little use for IS in this field either - it's often the case that you want to capture the motion in the scene your taking anyway.

If it was £100-200 more, then might be worth it - but for nearly £450 (7dayshop.com non-IS £785, IS £1229), I'd put the money elsewhere. Maybe a 1.4x extender at £209, Canon 100mm macro at £339, Canon 10-22 at £480 (or Sigma 10-20 at £329).

Just my thoughts!!!

Another useful thing if going near the coast are tide tables. Here's a link to the National Tidal and Sea Level Facility which contains the tidal data for the next month at many locations around UK.

http://www.pol.ac.uk/ntslf/tidalp.html

I write the software that computes this so it's a little bit of publicity!!!

Not wrong at all. Anyone that thinks a camera is going to get all the decision right is is misguided soul. A photograph should be something that is as pleasing to the eye as possible (not counting photojournalism here as that should represent reality too!). So when you leave many the decisions to a machine (the camera), what are the chances that it will get it spot on.

Image sensors are also so limited in their dynamic range, that you need some post processing even if you only want to represent what your eyes saw at the time.

And don't get me started on comments like "when I shot with film, there was no processing on the image". Of course there was ... most places that do processing have the minilab set to adjust each image by default.

So I agree 100% with you.

I think the sand was a bit firmer that day (perhaps the tide had been out longer). His shoes were covered in sand but he said that it wasn't firm enough around the boat to set up his tripod. So clearly a bit too wet out there. Standing still he found himself sinking slightly, but was still out there for a good 10-20 minutes!

I wasn't too impressed with him getting back into the car afterwards either! His trousers were wet up to his knees, although that was from the wet soaking up through them.

What you'll go through to get a good shot ;)
