Liverpool Pier Head Ferry Terminal

DSC_3920_1_2_3_4.jpg
The new ferry terminal building at the Pier Head recently came up in discussion and it was referred to, yet again, as a carbuncle.  I still like the quirky design, but agree that it doesn’t quite sit right alongside (or in front of, depending on your point of view) the likes of the Three Graces.  However, it does seem to sit better with the other new buildings under construction around it.  So, why single the ferry terminal out?

This photo, by the way, is one of my first edits using Lightroom 3 beta 2.  There was some Photoshop involved too, but a fine performance from the beta app.  A little slow to export, perhaps, but an otherwise much improved performance over Lightroom 2.

Liverpool Sunset Time Lapse Revisited

For several weeks, I’ve been unable to return to Anglican Cathedral tower for the Thursday evening viewings in order to keep fine tuning my technique due to the poor weather we’ve been experiencing.  Thursday, just gone, was the last scheduled night viewing from the roof of the tower.  So, I decided I would pay a visit come rain or shine.  The addition of the Liverpool ONE Wheel on the skyline gave me even more reason to go.  To my good fortune, the weather was almost ideal; plenty of clear, blue sky, interesting cloud formations and most importantly it was dry!

Here’s the time lapse video clip from this latest trip.

Interestingly, I just noticed one of my earlier time lapse videos made top spot of Flickr’s Explore for October 17th 2009. It may not stay there indefinitely, but I found it an interesting occurrence nonetheless.

Just as with SEO and religion, I’m not really one for discussing possible theories about how Flickr measures interestingness. I have my own theories about such things and don’t feel the need to convince anyone else unless they’re paying me for it. I will say this about Explore: I think it is more a measure of marketing rather than photography/videography. Perhaps, you can understand why I think this is? Agree/Disagree?

Liverpool City Mist – More Time Lapse

After my first attempt at shooting a time lapse sequence from the roof of the Anglican Cathedral tower, I returned with plenty of time to figure out a different way of supporting my camera and keeping it off the floor.  From the results, it looks like it was a success.  It’s just a shame the weather wasn’t as kind as it was the previous week.

Never the less, the city still makes for a fascinating show.  So, let’s get on with it!

On my next visit to the tower, I think I’ll try something else. The position on the roof I’ve been shooting from is very popular. So, it’s only fair someone else gets a go. Unless the weather is spectacular in which case it’s first come, first served, baby! :OP

From Way Up High: Liverpool Life at Dusk

Until 26th November 2009, the Anglican cathedral in Liverpool is allowing evening access to the tower roof.  A new lighting system has been installed which means visitors are now able to enjoy a very unique view of Liverpool after dark until 8pm on Thursdays excluding 5th November which is a real shame.

I’ve been on the roof before and it really is a spectacular view over not just the city centre, but also of the surrounding suburbs and even across the Mersey to Wirral.

Last week, I was on the roof again as the sun was setting and I took the opportunity to shoot a time lapse sequence.  Unfortunately, my tripod was resting on some wobbly floorboards which people kept treading on throughout the sequence.  So, there’s a degree of jitteriness caused by camera movement, but I really enjoy watching the resultant clip because it reminds me there’s so much life going on all over the city.
